2006 - 2007 Class Projects
Operation Military Kids
Team Members: Becky Johnson Schmierer, Catherine Conaghan, Dee Dee D’Amato, George Karegeannes, Marlene Keilholz, Melinda Wilke
Mission: To provide 4th through 12th grade students with comprehensive pre-college services that will support and encourage positive youth development to children of military families. To build both school and community capacity to support military kids. Also provide a support system for spouses of deployed service men and women. Utilize the military community in Racine as well as national organizations to accomplish our goal.
Vision: To target families affected by the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the on-going war on global terrorism by giving them the opportunity to build sustainable support systems as well as taking advantage of much needed programs for their school age children. By utilizing the resources we have within the community and nationally, it is our vision that this program can be self-sustaining and be a vital component in helping our military families.
Challenge: While these types of programs are found on military bases throughout the US, there is a missing component in Wisconsin for those who are currently deployed but not part of a military base. The identification of the targeted families and the promotion of the project will be crucial to its success.
Room to Grow
Team Members: Michelle Jones, Kathy Boero, Lori Bastian, Heidi Ward, Damon Menzie, Dan Hiatt
Mission: To create a sustainable learning environment, located at HALO, for the homeless children and their families.
Vision: Creating an educational resource room supplied with materials to assist learning and academic growth, to include, but not limited to, computers and educational kid-friendly software as well as other grade and age appropriate materials.
Challenge: To create and sustain a quality resource room and its contents and make sure the needs of the homeless children are met taking into account the limited and sporadic time at HALO.
$how Me the Money!
Team Members: Sarah Krause, Pam Klemm, Marie Hargrove, Dave Martin, JoAnn Rodriguez, Fran Hansen
Mission: To empower today’s educators to stop the growing trend of financial illiteracy among our youth.
Vision: It is our mission to partner with Racine Unified School District and various community resources to provide an event for high school seniors through which they can gain experience and knowledge of the financial costs of everyday living.
Challenge: Our challenge is to create an event that is sustainable for the Racine Unified School District that will address the problem of financial illiteracy among our youth.
The Downtown 7
Team Members: Jennifer Ullenberg, Brett McDonald, Michael Carter, Jeff Coe, Pam Hoadley, Katherine Rannow, Katherine Geyer
Mission: The Downtown 7 is committed to increase awareness of the assets and image of Downtown Racine.
Vision: Draw attention to some of the unique sites and/or history in Downtown Racine utilizing the newly created Lake Michigan Pathway.
Challenge: The city is continuing to grow away from the downtown area. There is limited knowledge within the community about the rich history of the city and Lake Michigan Pathway itself. Help restore the image of Racine by placing historical factoids along the pathway for residents and visitors to read.
House of Blues
Team Members: Mike Becker, Annette Burmeister, Cindy David, Dana Grueter, Brad Kostreva, Pam Petersen
Mission: The mission for House of Blues is to develop an interactive multimedia art fair which will provide the Racine community with exposure to the various arts and culture based groups in the Racine area.
Vision: It is our vision to provide a multifaceted cultural event that will benefit our community by exposing them to a variety of artisans, artists and performers. We feel that by holding this event in a public space we will encourage participation by individuals who would not normally connect themselves with the “arts” and offer an exposure venue for the various artisans and performers.
Challenge: The challenge for the House of Blues is to provide for an accessible way for artistic companies within Racine to network with existing and potential artists in the Racine community. Obstacles to this goal include a lack of known networking opportunity with artistic organizations (i.e. Choral Arts Society, RTG and OOHPS, and the Racine Arts Council), and opportunities in the Racine community for arts training (Academy of Dance, etc.). Accomplishing the mission and vision would consist of providing this networking opportunity in an interactive way to give existing and potential artists a chance to “try out’ artistic endeavors in a non-imposing, fun, and comfortable setting.
